The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA-EC) has been assigned to lead the process of developing the Small Town Development Framework for the entire Eastern Cape Province.
A draft Small Town Development Framework (STDF), which is aligned to the Integrated Urban Development Framework (IUDF) as well as the Draft Provincial Spatial Development Framework (PSDF) has been developed for the period 2020-2050.
The STDF advocates for spatial reconfiguration within the small towns thereby connecting residential, working and recreation areas while also maintaining rural-urban linkages in line with the aspirations of Chapter 8 of the National Development Plan (NDP).
Cogta MEC Xolile Nqatha said, “It is imperative for the session to probe and solicit the views of key stakeholders including municipalities, sector departments nationally and provincially. We need to identify strategic corridors, prioritise small towns for development and look at funding mechanisms including regional economic potentials to anchor growth of small towns.”
